20 Days Till Heaven…Day 5 – Field Trip, Delicious Flower Bouquet, and Last Picture
Memories from October 20th, 2016 – Day 5
I usually start off these daily posts with our “good morning” call, but looking into the audio files today we only had four calls recorded and the 1st one wasn’t until 5:27 pm. Out of those four calls, two were blank with no sound 🙁 and one was just me speaking, you could not hear her responding. So I only have one good call from 8:12 pm and we can come back to that later.
So to get back on track, today was a big day for Kate, as I said yesterday it was Pierce’s 1st Field Trip. She was so excited and so was he. She looked forward to knocking out as many “1st things” as possible with the kids. This just happened to be the next one in line.
We had to be careful though, because you could drive yourself crazy chasing them down. Meaning for every “1st moment” that we were able to be part of, there was that grim face of the future staring you down from a distance reminding you of how many “1st moments” you were not going to be part of.
We tried to take them just one at a time and be grateful that we were blessed as we did them. Her more so than I of course, as she was smarter and I was still learning to live by her perspective.
OK, back on track a 2nd time…Pre-K 3’s Field Trip to Jones Family Farm.
Beautiful day and perfect weather. We took Kate’s little motorized scooter so that she could maneuver around. We were able to get her on the tractor that took us around the farm as all of the little ones picked fresh vegetables and pumpkins.
Something else that was really awesome was the hospitality of this place. The kids were given these grocery bags to collect their vegetables in. Kate’s was overflowing and ripped because every time the kids stopped to pick a new vegetable the owner of the farm was stuffing her bag with the biggest handful he could find. Such a kind gesture. He even gave Pierce an entire cotton plant which still resides on our porch to this day.
In addition, at one point they were showing us the wild flowers that they grow on the farm and I think it was the farmers daughter that made a bouquet on the spot for her. It was fresh wild flowers, and she threw some fresh dill into the bouquet as well. We laughed over how delicious the flowers smelled.
The next school day we were given another bag of vegetables that they sent back to Pierces school for us. Later on we also received a letter to come by and get free Christmas tree from the farm for the kids at Christmas time. The owners of the farm were amazing and thoughtful.
I sent her a text with the pictures that we took, and she loved them.
Of course we posted them later.
These were a few of our favorite ones.
And this one is very special because it was the last picture that her and I ever took together.
All in all the field trip was great. Not too much else happened this day. I went to BJ’s later in the evening and brought her a Roomba to help ease her mind about not being able to clean up. It helped a lot with the little maintenance cleanings that you need to do with kids and crumbs all day long. I still swear by the Roomba to this day.
The last text message that we had this day was about her getting a hospital bed for the room. She later said it crossed her mind that maybe we should get one because the body may do certain things during hospice care or death. I wasn’t having it, there was a much better alternative available on Amazon for $19.99 that would protect the bed if needed.
Here is a random video from later that night in the basement. I have no idea why I was recording and there is no meaning to it, but it was part of that day.
This is the only call we had that day that actually worked.
Here is an audio clip of that call. Nothing much to it.
She just wanted me to bring her a sub. With her appetite being as small as it was because of her health I am sure that I ran up and delivered it as fast as possible. That sounds like a good ending to the night to me.
