20 Days Till Heaven…Day 4 – Share The News, Happy Dwarf, and People Are Awesome

Memories from October 19th, 2016 – Day 4

I felt kind of weird sitting here thinking about how to open the post for today.  I was cautious when listening to the 1st call that we had recorded for today thinking that it was going to be dreadful, but surprisingly it wasn’t at all.  It once again was just like any other day.  Just another reminder that at the end beginning of the day, life is going to be what it is. You might as well see it through and make the best of it.

Anyway, we had our normal “good morning” call just checking in with each other.  We told each other, “I miss you.” She told me that Pierce had a pretty rough night.  She was saying that around midnight he was stuck in one of those half sleeping half awake whimpering episodes that kids have.  She told me that she was up at 12am, 1am, and 3am, but was mostly tired from the sleeping pills.

We talked about a field trip that Pierce was having the next day and about having a pastor come to the house to make visits.  I asked her if she was going to have energy for the field trip tomorrow.  She responded with a quick yes!  I don’t think there was anyway in the world that she was going to miss her 1st baby’s 1st field trip.  Before we hung up I asked her to send me a picture of the Happy from The Seven Dwarfs that she wanted Pierce to look like.  That’s what he wanted to be for Halloween this year.  She said, “the one with the red shirt and khaki colored bottom.”  I told her I didn’t think that was the right one, but she insisted that it was.

A little while later she sent me this.  She was having trouble maintaining an appetite the past few days, but the new pills that she was taking had finally helped.

A few hours later she decided to finally make things public and share the news with everyone on Facebook that she was not going to be receiving treatment anymore.

I called her again to check in and she told me that her phone had been ringing back to back to back since she posted it.  I didn’t want to keep her long, but I let her know that I was going to the fabric store later in the evening to pick up the things that we needed to make Pierce’s Happy Dwarf costume ourselves.  I told her that I still thought that she was thinking of the wrong dwarf.  Before we hung up I told her that I was thinking about her.  In typical Kate fashion, giving me a hard time she replied, “Good you should…”

Here is a small audio clip of that call.

I called her again on my way home to see what she wanted for lunch.  She told me that one of her bosses and coworkers stopped by for lunch and not to bring anything.

I made it home and was able to say hi to her coworkers as they were leaving.  We hung out for a little while and then I headed back out for the costume supplies.

While I was out, she would text me that I was right about the Dwarf costume.  She went down to the boys playroom and found Pierce’s Happy Dwarf play toy.  She was originally thinking of Grumpy Dwarf, but was wrong.  She also sent me a picture that she had received from one of her coworkers.  It was the most amazing display of support that I had ever seen.  It was awesome!

She posted this on Facebook a little while later.  Pretty awesome right?

It looks like she also posted this later that day.

Later on I called one last time for the day while I was out at the store just to check on what size pants and shoes Pierce wore.

Just a side note before I finish.  As I was looking through Facebook today to collect the memories, I saw a ton of support for Kate.  I took a moment to really soak it all in today.  There was a lot of people thinking about her and showing her a lot of love.  Friends, Family, and People are amazing.  Just want to say Thank You to everyone that took the time to call, text, write, or whatever you did to show her support, thoughts, and prayers back then.
